The Position

To provide engineering support to the Generation section on a wide range of operational functions and the supervision of generating plant and buildings undertaking designated planned and unplanned maintenance on the buildings, plant and equipment. The Generation Technician is part of the operations team and must be able to provide shift cover when required and will also work also with the facilities team as required.

The Responsibilities

1. Supervise and operate the generating plant to ensure security of supplies. 
2. Prepare generators for operation, monitoring of generators when online and undertake shutdown procedures to safeguard the plant and ensure availability.
3. Support control room operators and shift technicians demonstrating strong knowledge in managing generators and the CIEG.
4. Responsible for the operation, supervision, safety and security of the power station site, and for the safety of staff working on the plant. The post holder provides indirect supervision of staff and contractors working on the power station site at any time.
5. To carry out approved procedures for the safe operation of high voltage and low voltage plant and mechanical apparatus to allow such equipment to be safely operated.
6. Provide cover for other operational staff, including Shift Engineers, Control Room Operators and the Shift Technicians. 
7. To assist with both planned and unplanned maintenance activities on buildings, plant and associated equipment.
8. To be able to undertake emergency repairs and work on systems of a potentially hazardous nature while maintaining all aspects of safety.
9. To undertake standard operational procedures as required to maintain the generation plant and auxiliary equipment in an operable condition.
10. Produce clear and detailed reports of activities in asset management systems.
11. To oversee and at times manage both internal maintenance staff or subcontractors.
12. Communicate with suppliers and manufacturers for sourcing replacement parts and materials.
13. Provide technical leadership as required.
14. Undertake specific engineering support roles as part of project teams on capital projects, to ensure the timely completion of those works.
15. Comply with national and local legislation, specifically related to Health & Safety, Equal Opportunities and Data Protection.
16. Assist the Senior Operations Engineer with the management of Health and Safety issues within the team, and the implementation of the company’s Health and Safety policies and procedures including the review of policies and procedures relevant to the section.
17. Produce RAMS, toolbox talks and any other health and safety documentation as required.
18. Provide assistance on regulatory commitments such as COMAH, PSSR and Legionella.
19. Such other duties as may be allocated and interchange of duties as required.

Experience / Qualifications / Education

· The post holder must be a qualified mechanical or electrical technician and thoroughly understand the complexities of the various interconnected power generation systems, or have equivalent proven experience in power generation and able to demonstrate thorough understanding of the various interconnected power generation systems.
· Requires a theoretical engineering knowledge consistent with HNC in an engineering discipline or equivalent experience, combined with operational experience in a power generation or equivalent industry.
· Required to train and become an Authorised Person for Power Station under E&M Safety Rules
· Must become certified under Boiler Operations Accreditation Scheme (BOAS) in boiler operations.
· Must become certified on all additional training as required such as EEMUA tank inspection training and legionella.
· The post holder must have the ability to understand information from diagrams and manuals.
· The ability to rectify or report faults and abnormalities on the plant.
· Thorough and specialised knowledge of generation plant operations and control
· Requires detailed knowledge of control systems operated by Guernsey Electricity, together with their underlying configuration software and techniques.
· Requires high level of competency and experience with computer technology, including Microsoft applications.
· Demonstrate a current knowledge of the functional structure of Guernsey Electricity, its mission, objectives, strategies, and critical success factors.
· The post holder must acquire knowledge of safe working practices.
