Substance Use Educator

The Guernsey Youth & Housing project offers support to young people, between the ages of 11- 25, Our work focuses on homelessness and the wider issues that cause it including independent living skills, substance use, leaving care, employability and isolation, delivering over 20 dedicated projects supporting young people.

In the role of a Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Educator, you'll provide support and education and brief interventions directly to young people aged (10-25 years old) both in the classroom, to the community and through small group  and one to one work. The role will also provide training to parents and professionals to help them feel more confident to support young people.

We provide welcoming and accessible services that respects and values young people as individuals we are professional, non-judgemental, and confidential encouraging young people to make informed healthy decisions.

• Deliver and evaluate an evidence-based education programmes to 10–18-year-olds within Bailiwick schools leading to the prevention of the uptake of smoking and reducing the prevalence of drinking alcohol and taking drugs. 
• Developing new lessons, service interventions and initiatives in line with emerging evidence, best practice guidelines and changes in legislation. 
• Providing information about the help and advice available to young people who need support with substance use including tobacco. 
• Working in partnership with the PSHCE Adviser and Secondary Schools to develop and co-deliver programmes which support the prevention of drug, alcohol and tobacco use amongst young people.
• Supporting young people in informal / community settings on drug, alcohol and tobacco health related topics (e.g., Youth Clubs, Scout groups, community events such as the shows). 
• Deliver planned brief interventions for young people who are at risk of or are presenting with low levels of substance use.

the role of a Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Educator, we're ideally looking for someone who has:

• Degree or recognised qualification in a related area (e.g. Teaching, Performing Arts, Youth Work, Social Work)
• Experience of working effectively with young people (from 10 – 25 years) in groups and individually, including developing a positive rapport with children or young people. 
• Demonstrable skills to develop effective and productive relationships with schools and other agencies working with young people.              
• Knowledge of health improvement or public health related issues, specifically drugs, alcohol and tobacco 
• Good working knowledge of Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Canva)
