Junior Hatchery Technician - Guernsey Sea Farms

About Guernsey Sea Farms

Guernsey Sea Farms ("GSF") is a shellfish hatchery and nursery on the north-east coast of Guernsey, specialising in the production of oyster seed. We are one of only two hatcheries in the UK and supply oyster seed to customers around the world, including to the UK, Canada and South Africa. In addition to shellfish seed production, GSF also cultivates marine organisms such as copepods for ecotoxicology laboratories. 

About the role 

This is an entry-level role, ideal for someone at the start of their career in marine science or aquaculture who is eager to learn. You'll work closely alongside our Hatchery and Nursery Managers, gradually building up your skills and confidence across multiple areas of hatchery operations under their supervision. No previous experience is necessary - full training will be provided to the right candidate. We're a small, friendly team and are looking for a motivated, reliable, and physically fit individual with a positive attitude, strong attention to detail, and enthusiasm for practical, hands-on marine work. This is a diverse role that includes a mix of laboratory, hatchery, and outdoor tasks, so adaptability is essential. Some duties involve precise lab work such as microscopy and record-keeping, while others are more physical and practical. Work primarily occurs Monday to Friday, however responsibilities will include a few hours of weekend and bank holiday work rostered approximately 1-2 times a month (timings flexible) with time off in lieu.

Assist the Hatchery Manager with day-to-day operations, under their supervision, including: 

• Assisting with oyster spawnings 

• Monitoring of oyster larvae and small seed (microscope work, temperature, flow, food levels) 

• Water changes in larvae tanks

• Washing and grading of small hatchery seed and larger nursery seed

• Assisting with maintenance and monitoring of broodstock (parent) populations (in hatchery and on outdoor oyster tables) 

• Assisting with maintenance and monitoring of microalgae cultures (from flasks up to large blooming tanks)

• Assisting with maintenance and monitoring of marine copepods for ecotoxicology customers

• Supporting the planning and execution of experiments

• Packing and paperwork for shipments As this is a small business there is also going to be times when help is needed in other areas of the business, as needs arise. 

What we're looking for 

Essential:

• No previous experience necessary - full training provided

• A-Levels or GCSEs (or equivalent) including a maths or science subject

• A genuine interest in and enthusiasm for the marine environment

• Physically fit and comfortable working both indoors and outdoors in varied weather

• Willingness to learn, follow instructions accurately, and work well as part of a supervised team

• Confidence with, or willingness to learn, basic data collection and entry, spreadsheets, and reporting

• A good team player (we are a small team): positive attitude, strong communication and interpersonal skills with a good work ethic

• Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills

• Self-motivated, with the ability to follow guidance and work to a high standard 

Desirable: 

• Any previous experience or hobbyist interest in aquaculture, fisheries, marine husbandry, or related fields

• Basic laboratory experience (e.g., microscopy, water testing)

• Basic understanding of pumps, filters, and simple plumbing systems

• Full driving licence
