The Position

Elizabeth College Junior School is seeking an individual to join our Caretaking Team at King's Road, with effect from September 2025.  The ideal candidate would be personable, technically capable and able to carry out general caretaking duties. 

The role is year-round and full time, for an average of 42 hours per week based on a bi-weekly Saturday morning working arrangement. The successful postholder will work for 40 hours one week followed by 44 hours the following week.

Please note: A work permit is not available with this post, therefore you will need to currently hold a valid resident permit or certificate to work in Guernsey.  

The Responsibilities

Typical duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following:

Caretaking

·         Unlock and lock the buildings and school gates before and after the school day

·         Patrol all grounds and buildings at the end of the day to check security

·         Report/ arrange repairs as necessary 

·         Act as Special Constable for the road crossing and car park duties during the school day and occasionally out of hours for College Events

·         Conduct weekly fire alarm tests and be familiar with fire procedures

·         Conduct & record weekly planned flushing of lesser-used water outlets, to comply with our Legionella regime

·         Act as Fire Marshall, for which you will receive appropriate training

·         Ensure lights and other powered fittings (e.g. Fire Guard unites) are kept in working order (e.g. bulb replacement, batteries, etc.)

·         Patrol and undertake basic grounds duties, including gardening

·         Ensure toilets are stocked with toilet paper, towels, air freshener and other relevant items, securing as required, and arrange for the ordering of stock through the College Office

·         Undertake basic cleaning duties during the working day, and assist with the deep cleaning during holiday periods

·         Arrange deep cleaning of classroom carpets during holidays (Pre-School termly) with contract cleaning company

·         Transfer of stores e.g. stationery to classrooms, etc.

·         Review with the Senior Caretaker ECJS’s weekly programme of events and support as required

·         Set up the Hall and other designated main assembly areas for assemblies and other functions such as parents’ evenings.  Ensure that all such areas are laid out properly for the start of the next school day

·         Assist with the laying out and putting away of outdoor furniture

·         Undertake such Health & Safety, first aid, fire and other training as may be directed by the ECJS H&S Co-ordinator and/or Bursar

·         Assist the Senior Caretaker, as directed by the Maintenance Manager or Headteacher, standing in for them during sickness or leave periods

 

Wider College Responsibilities 

·         Requirement to become a Special Constable and support the wider team with road crossing duties 

·         Requirement to obtain D1 driving licence to allow for the driving of the Junior School minibuses (training will be provided)

·         Requirement to undertake regular Health & Safety and Safeguarding training

·         Requirement to undertake Fire Marshall training.

Experience / Qualifications / Education

Essential requirements:

  • Willing to obtain a minibus (D1) driving licence
  • Willing to train as a Special Constable

Desirable requirements:

  • Trained in Health & Safety i.e. Fire Marshalling, Legionella, Asbestos Awareness, First Aid, Safeguarding, traffic control
  • Experience of working in a caretaking or similar role 
  • Experience of working in a school or other educational setting
  • Experience driving vehicles/ minibuses
  • Knowledge of a trade or trades
  • Knowledge of workplace compliance requirements
