The Position

Based at one of our three main surgeries, Rohais, St Martins and Cobo, the post holder is responsible for the delivery of a full range of general practice nurse services to the practice population,  supported by the Lead Nurse and GPs within the Practice, they will deliver care within the boundaries of their role, focusing on supporting patients to be healthy, monitoring of long-term conditions, health prevention and screening activities.  They will work both independently and collaboratively within the practice team to meet the needs of patients whilst conforming to Practice Policy and Protocols.


The Responsibilities

  • Collection of blood samples whilst understanding different patient’s needs and reactions and recognise and deal appropriately with whatever situation should arise.
  • Collection of urine samples, other specimens and swabs. 
  • Ear care including being able to review and diagnose blocked ears, carry out irrigation procedure and be able to distinguish between normal and infected ear canals.
  • Undertaking ECG’s.
  • Administration of childhood immunisation programmes and providing post vaccination advice.
  • Administration of travel vaccinations and be able to offer full travel health care advice including malaria prophylaxis treatment.
  • Provide a tissue viability service which includes wound assessment, management and evaluation, leg ulcer management, suture and clip removal.
  • With additional training provide Doppler investigation, short-stretch and 3 or 4 layer bandaging.
  • Provide a women’s health service including contraceptive/family planning advice, contraceptive checks, well woman health checks and breast awareness and sexual health advice.  
  • With appropriate training assist with the practice cervical screening programme.
  • Provide a men’s health service including well man health checks and providing advice on testicular examination, prostate problems and sexual health.
  • Assist designated minor op Partners in providing minor surgery.
  • Once appropriately trained, undertake cryotherapy on referral from a GP.
  • Administer annual flu and pneumonia vaccines.
  • Perform spirometry and reversibility testing and provide education on inhaler technique.
  • Perform blood pressure checks and provide general advice regarding readings and treatments. 
  • Perform weight management checks, provide appropriate dietary advice and administer appropriate weight management treatments for individual patients using practice protocols and with the support of GP.
  • With appropriate additional training, provide review, monitoring and education for chronic disease patients with diabetes, asthma, COPD, coronary heart disease and hypertension. If qualifications and experience allow also plan implement and evaluate and manage appropriate treatment programmes for the above patients.
  • With additional training provide nurse clinics such as diabetes.
  • Provide opportunistic health promotion particularly in relation to healthy living, diet, smoking, alcohol, exercise.
  • Renew and update health promotion boards in public areas using up to date information.
  • Offer first aid and emergency treatment as required including resuscitation and anaphylaxis management.
  • Provide advice, and information about a range of health conditions and minor ailments referring to other members of the practice team as necessary.
  • Provide telephone advice to patients. 
  • Depending on individual surgery, assist GPs with medicals for insurance, fire-fighters, divers and pilots as required.
  • If designated, act as Infection Control Lead for the individual surgery where based, in liaison with the Lead Nurse.
  • Comply with all Practice Policies and Protocols including Health & Safety and Infection Control. 

 


Experience / Qualifications / Education

  • Qualified nurse registered with the NMC
  • Minimum one year’s post registration nurse experience
  • Good standard of education
  • Proven record of personal achievement  
  • Motivation/Enthusiasm
