The Position

Elizabeth College Junior School is seeking an enthusiastic, hard-working, and versatile individual to join our Maintenance Team to fulfil a wide range of tasks.  The role is based at the Queens Road and Kings Road sites, with effect from May 2025.

This is a year-round role, 42 hours per week, based on a bi-weekly Saturday working arrangement.  The hours of work are 7.30 am to 4.30 pm Monday to Friday, with bi-weekly Saturday working from 8.00 am to 12.00 pm.

The Responsibilities

Typical duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Main Duties & Responsibilities

    Premises Security & Site Management
    ·         Ensure that buildings are secure
    ·         Ensure that fire alarm systems are updated and maintained
    ·         Ensure that windows and doors are in good repair informing the College Maintenance Manager  of any window or door defects which may lead to a breach of security
    ·         Ensure the school is open and adequately staffed by site staff for day to day school activities
    ·         Deal with breaches of security and communicate to relevant staff or emergency services
    ·         Oversee any reasonable key requests and orders and distribute to stakeholders
    ·         Locking and unlocking external doors as required
    ·         Co-ordinate and record weekly testing of the fire alarm system
    ·         Oversee and resource all road-crossing and car-parking duties
    Cleaning
    ·         Recording and monitoring of all cleaning throughout the premises
    ·         Undertake ad-hoc cleaning tasks not included in the contractor cleaner’s specification
    ·         Ensure all toilet areas remain clean and safe replenishing consumables as required
    ·         Clean up after pupil accidents / illness during the day
    ·         Carry out emergency cleaning and removal of graffiti
    ·         Arrange deep cleaning of school premises (internal and external) during school holidays

    Porterage
    ·         Undertaking/arranging for safe storing and movement of items of furniture, equipment and provisions as required
    ·         Receiving and directing as appropriate deliveries for the school.
    ·         Keeping up to date records, inventories and forms as required.
    ·         Setting up and packing away for all school events.

    Maintenance of School Grounds and Buildings
    ·         Ensuring the premises and grounds are kept free of litter and that all play equipment is stored in a tidy manner.
    ·         Liaison with and supervision of contractors and undertake regular site inspections.
    ·         Follow an agreed programme of planned maintenance in liaison with the CMM.
    ·         Ensure monthly testing of emergency lighting and record outcomes..
    ·         Ensure the efficient operation of heating and lighting throughout the school.
    ·         Co-ordinate replacing lights, tubes, diffusers, starters where necessary.
    ·         Monitor and check ventilation and air conditioning systems and ensure there is an adequate supply of hot and cold water.
    ·         Ensure all downpipes drains and gullies are free flowing and clean.
    ·         Ensure entrances, steps and paths are gritted prior to any forecasted freezing weather.
    ·         Ensure that stocks of grit/salt are maintained.
    ·         Ensure the removal of snow and other obstructions from main entrances, steps, paths.
    ·         Prevent unauthorized or unsafe parking on the school site
    ·         Ensure fire doors are free of clutter and obstructions
    ·         Support staff requests with putting up or taking down external or internal equipment
    ·         Co-ordinate and undertake any reasonable repairs as and when required
    ·         Ensure all stock is kept up to date and ordered
    ·         Ensure all hard-landscaped areas are kept free of weeds / moss etc.

    Compliance with Health & Safety
    ·         Ensure compliance with relevant legislation by periodic inspection of all areas
    ·         Ensure appropriate signs and notices are displayed
    ·         Ensure fire exits are accessible, hazards are removed and fire fighting equipment is correctly positioned and serviced
    ·         To be trained and respond as Fire Warden and Special Constable
    ·         Undertake weekly legionella testing as required
    ·         Undertake weekly fire door checks/ladder checks or any other reasonable statutory requirement as directed by the CMM
    ·         Notify appropriate agencies, via the CMM, where there is a pest control problem
    ·         Undertake monthly temperature checks & 3-monthly cleaning & de-scaling regime.

    Supervision & Communication
    ·         Line manage and supervise the workload of the ECJS Caretaker.
    ·         Attend the weekly maintenance meeting with the Headteacher ECJS & CMM
    ·         Plan, prioritise and record the weekly activities of the ECJS site team
    ·         Consult with, update and advise all staff of all maintenance activities which may impact their work or access to the buildings

    General
    ·         Co-ordinate response to all ad-hoc requests from ECJS staff
    ·         Undergo and meet school conditions for a satisfactory enhanced DBS check
    ·         Comply with all school policies and procedures
    ·         Demonstrate due regard for safeguarding and promoting the health, safety and welfare of pupils, staff and visitors
    ·         A high degree of discretion and confidentiality will be expected at all times.
    ·         The role works closely with support staff at ECJS with whom a close degree of mutual support and co-operation will be essential.

Experience / Qualifications / Education

Essential requirements:

  • Willing to train as a First Aider and Fire Marshal
  • Willing to train as a Special Constable 
  • Holder of a valid driving licence, and willingness to obtain D1 licence
  • Sound verbal, literary and numeracy skills
  • IT literate
  • Experience of working in a similar role involving cleaning, security, and/or basic maintenance
  • Basic skills in cleaning, maintenance of garden and grounds, minor repairs, and/ or interior decorating
  • Ability to learn additional skills such as traffic control, minibus driving, fire marshal, first aid and pedestrian crossing

Desirable requirements:

  • Experience of working in an educational setting 
  • Knowledge of workplace Health & Safety compliance requirements
